Anticoagulation Myth Busters

MYTH

“NOACs, like warfarin, can interact with food”

REALITY

“Rivaroxaban 15mg/20mg when prescribed for stroke prevention in AF needs to be taken with food/the main meal of the day to ensure complete absorption and high oral bioavailability. Pharmacokinetic studies have demonstrated a 39% increase in mean AUC when rivaroxaban is taken with food compared to ingestion under fasting conditions.”1

The timing of administration of apixaban, dabigatran and edoxaban in relation to food is unimportant.2-4
